Blog Four--Ten things everyone needs to learn

What should you learn to be successful?  Do schools do an adequate job preparing students
for the real  world?  Is learning more than passing a test?  Read the article by Stephen Downes (link below) to learn about the things he thinks everyone should learn.
Select two and comment on, and then...create a short list of five items you think students ought to know. You may wish to tailor the items on your list to elementary school students, or you might consider eighth graders moving on to high school, or you may consider what  you think high school students should be taking with them as they graduate.
Finally, read posts of two students and comment.

1.How to predict consequences
I think this is very important because my first graders clearly do not think about the consequences that may lie ahead. Even though predicting what will happen is very difficult, especially for a first grader, they should be able to think of what could happen, or “what comes next”.

2.How to Read
I think that this is difficult for first graders. They are still learning how to read, so obviously, they cannot always think deeply about what the words really mean. Throughout the year though, I have seen some students who have excelled and really thought about what they were reading.

My list:

1.How to be creative
I think this is so important for students in high school to know. Many projects in high school require creativity. I think that kids who really are creative hold back in high school because they want to fit in, but they really should express themselves.

2.To make eye contact
Eve contact can tell a lot about other people. You can tell if they are listening or engaged in the conversation. This is a skill that the students will take with them as they move on in their life.

3.Branch out
Especially in high school, it doesn’t last forever. Take advantage of high school and get to know other people. Don’t just stay with a close clique.

4.Don’t be afraid to succeed.
Always try your hardest. It doesn’t matter what other people think. You should do what is best for you and not worry about what others will think.

5.Simply be nice
Something so easy as being nice can make a big difference. Just a smile can make someone’s day a little brighter. Everyone likes a person who is always nice.

I think “How to be Creative” is important because it can get you far in life. Once a student graduates and gets a job they will need to be creative in order to advance in their career and earn respect from their bosses. Coming up with new ideas and new methods of accomplishing tasks is essential to succeeding in a career.
I think “How to Communicate” is important because it allows you to get your point across. If you are making a presentation or trying to convince someone to buy your product, communicating is key. Making people understand where you are coming from and what you are saying will make succeeding in your career so much easier.
Things Students Should Know
1. How to say thank you
I think students need to realize how to be grateful for things. Once they are out in the real world, showing gratitude will show people that they value what they have and don’t take things for granted which is a trait respected by coworkers and bosses.
2. How to work hard
Students should learn that things in life aren't free and they have to earn what they want. If they show that they are passionate and willing to work hard, they will have a better chance of succeeding in their career field.

3. How to get things done
I think sometimes students get into the habit of saying they are going to do things but not actually doing them. The students that are able to accomplish their goals will be the ones who go far in life.

4. How to show respect
There is often a lack of respect in our culture today. Students should learn that teachers and parents work so hard to give them opportunities so they need to have respect for those adults and let them know they appreciate everything they have,

5. How to be open to change
If students learn to be open to change and take advice well, they will be able to advance in their career field because people like workers who strive to be the best that can be even if that involves trying something new.

I like Sarah's rules about making eye contact and branching out. I think making eye contact goes along with showing respect and it can make all the difference in a job interview. I also think branching out is a good rule because it gives students a chance to meet new people and gather new skills which will only help them in the job world.

I think that "How to Emphasize" is extremely important because it teaches kids not to be selfish and to think about other people. We are all consistently around and interacting with people at all stages of our lives. Because of this, we need to learn how to understand them and to create good relationships with them. Children need to learn how to recognize other people's feelings and take them into consideration.
I also think that "How to Value Yourself" is very important also. Like the author said, "You can have all the knowledge and skills in the world, but they are meaningless if you do not feel personally empowered to use them." Self esteem and self worth are very important to a person. In order to succeed and advance in life, one needs to feel motivated and confident. Without this, they won't be able to advance in their future career or life.

My List:

1. How to respect others
Students need to learn how to respect their teachers. Teachers sacrifice so much for them, and the least they can do is respect them and act graciously towards them.

2. How to love one another
Students will encounter so many different types of people in their life. They need to learn how to love one another and accept other people for who they are instead of judging them on their differences.

3. How to be hardworking
If students are not hardworking, they will never be successful or get anything done. The only way their hopes and dreams can be accomplished is if they work hard at them. Hard work is the key to success.

4. How to be thankful
Students need to realize that so many people make sacrifices for them on a day to day basis. Their parents, their teachers and family members are just some of the examples. Just a simple "Thank you" every day means so much.

5. How to keep going
We are all faced with difficulties at some point in our lives. The best way to deal with them is to keep going. Students need to understand that no matter what, they shouldn't give up. They should keep persevering to achieve their goals.

I really liked Sarah's post about being nice to others. Although it is rarely mentioned, being nice to someone goes so far in life. Its a simple, yet important act that has the potential to brighten someone's day.
I also really liked Pauline's comment about being open to change. I think this is vital for students because they will have to go through many changes in their schooling and their lives. The best way to deal with this change is to be open to it and accept it.

1. How to be creative.
I think how to be creative is important because in todays world peopl dont notice the regular things in life, thy notuce the weird and different things in the owrld. If you are creative and can come up with ideas that will wow people in our world, then you can make it far in life. A creative mindis a good mind.

2. How to communicate clearly.
Communication is key everything that people do. In realtionships, school, sports, work, etc. Communication is waht makes verything run smoothly. You can't run a buisness with out communication. A team can't run plays if they dont communicate to eachother.

My list:
1. Voice your opinion.
-If you don't voice your opinion then you can't share a ccreative idea that you might have. Voiceing your opinion is a way of showing confidence.

2.Be able to take a step out of your comfort zone.
-Not everything in life will go the way you plan. SOmetimes other peoples ideas may be a stretch for you but you have to do it. Take a chance is a good way to show youre open to change.

3.Present yourself well.
-My dad always tells me that how i present myself is what people look at the most. Showing that you are a focused person reveals that you can work hard and stay on task. Looking nice and clean cut shows that you have respect for yourself.

4.Be enthusiastic about whatever you are doing.
-Even if you dont like what you are doing just show some type of interest in it. Its about showing respect for the person or people that set up the activity you are doing.

5. Be aware of your surroundings and be selective as to who you associate with.
-You always have to be aware of things going on around you. You should stay focus on whatever youre doing but dont puut yourself in an enviroment where you dont feel comfortable at all.

I like Megans one about respecting others. It's such a true statement because the respect tat you give is the respect you will recieve. I also like Sarahs where it says dont be afraid to succeed. You have to do all you can in life to get where you want to be. You have to push yourself no matter what others are doing.

I agree with Megan that "How to empatize" is the most important. I honestly did not think if that one before i saw it on the list and i am suprised i didnt. Students need to know how to deal with other people especially in difficult situations. This is an important lesson that will be learned in the classroom byuut used more in the real world.

1.)How to read
-I think this is important because most learning and future needs are meet through learing how to read.

2.)How to write
-this is huge in beiong sucessful in the real world because withoput this your rescouces are very limited.

3.)How to emphize
-This is important when dealing with others mostly after school.

4.)Make good friends
-This is important in deciding the rest iof your life. Making good friends is essential to being sucessful and living to your full potential.

5.) Deciding your morals
-This does not have to mean sex, drugs, and alchohol. In fact i was thinking more things like lying or stealing decigind in grasde schppl what you tyhink is sucessful will help shape your future greately.

How to predict consequences.
Students can learn from watching other students. They can see how they behave and what happens when those behaviors are not approved of by the teacher. Studenst should bea ble to apply this lesson to all parts of life. By watching others, you can see what happens in response to specific behaviors.

How to be creative.
Students need to learn to be creative. They can decide to see life narrowly or be brave and explore the unrestricted imagination. Children have wonderful imaginations. They need to be able to express what they imagine. They need to learn proper ways to express their thoughts, ideas and creations.

MY LIST.
1) How to properly prioritize.
Students need to learn how to prioritize. It helps with homework, projects, chores, and work issues.

2) How to make good decisions.
Good decisions is very broad. One should think about the effect an action will have on their school, friends, work or relationships. Students need to learn that most decisions will effect things that seem totally unrelated. The "opportunity cost" will be shocking. Students need to prepare and learn how to make the best of these choices.

3) Students need to learn that they are responsible, no matter what their age. They should be able to take care of themselves in some kind of degree. They should know when they need to go to the bathroom and how to eat. They should know how to raise their hand if they have a question or what to state something.

4)Students should learn respect. We go to a Catholic high school. If you aren't Catholic, you should at least respect those who are and those who want to participate in a respectful service to celebrate their faith. They should not talk, goof around or be disrespectful to those who want to be there! They should learn to repsect each person's decisions and beliefs.

5) Students should be taught how to use manners. It sounds dumb but manners ar ebeing lost in the generations. People are expected to be proper. The yneed to be taught how to be proper as children so they perfect it and get in the habit of being polite.
